70-200 FL has a lot of sample variation at 200mm f/2.8. Stopping down a little to f/3.2 should help a lot. 70-200 FL is rather weak at close focus distance. It is optimised for mid to far distance. 300 PF is optimised for close to mid distance, it is weaker at far distance.

The MTF charts convincingly show the latest Nikon 70-200mm outshines the other two lenses (both excellent lenses by any measure) in optical performance through the entire zoom range.
This *lesser* f4 lens gets extremely good reviews, even citing it better than the 2nd generation 70-200mm VR. The 70-200/4G is lesser in price and weight but not in performance. I also own the 70-200/2.8E FL and they are equal in sharpness overall. The E is a boat anchor in comparison and I always use the G except in low light situations.

The most obvious lens to compare against the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S is its F-mount cousin, the famous “E FL” version of Nikon’s long line of 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. Released in October of 2016, the Nikon F 70-200mm f/2.8E FL was an instant hit and we ultimately declared it Nikon’s best 70-200mm lens ever. I took all three lenses, the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED AF-S VR, and the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS, and I shot our test chart with all of them on the Sony a7R II. For Canon, I used a Metabones T Smart Adapter IV, and for Nikon, I used a Novoflex Nikon to Sony E adapter. I manually focused all three lenses

That extra 5% of potentially better image quality is not worth the weight, size, and cost of the 2.8 for my uses. For landscape use I'd absolutely get the 70-300 over the 70-200. At $550 the 70-300 doesn't break the bank either. You could just keep the 70-200 for now and just buy the 70-300 to try out for awhile.
The new version’s official name is 70-200 f/2.8 E FL ED VR, in short FL from here on. The E denotes an electronically controlled aperture, the FL a fluorite glass element. Nikon has done a complete optical redesign and changed some of the exterior layout, like adding extra configurable buttons to the lens for either focus-lock or focus

At f2.8 it’s great on the the 12MP 5D, acceptable on the 5DIII and a bit rough around the edges on the 5DSR. The Nikon f2.8E FL is very sharp from f2.8 on both a Z6 (24MP) and a D4 (just 16MP). Focusing of course is faster on the newer Nikon lens which is an advantage for sport action and servo focus.

In fact, when the Nikon F-mount 70-200mm f/2.8E FL came out in 2016, we praised it for its relatively light weight compared to prior 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. While standards have risen in recent years (partly Nikon’s own doing thanks to their excellent and lightweight Z lenses), the fact remains that the Z 70-200mm f/2.8’s weight is
